Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament, announced on the 24 November 2016 that he would not run for a third term as President of the European Parliament as from 2017. Instead, he would run for the German Bundestag as the head of the SPD list in North Rhine-Westphalia. The statement fuelled speculation that Schulz could enter the race to challenge Angela Merkel in the 2017 federal elections in Germany. Chancellor Merkel announced on the 20 November 2016 that she would stand for a fourth term as CDU candidate in the the 2017 federal elections. There were also rumours that he might be interested to replace Frank-Walter Steinmeier as the next Foreign Minister of Germany. The announcement also renewed interest in who would become the new President of the European Parliament as from 2017. The informal power-sharing deal between the European People’s Party and the Socialists and Democrats to share the Parliament’s presidency, would mean that EPP should take over from the S&D in January 2017. However it was not clear whether the arrangement would hold. |
