Sinn Féin's Martin McGuinness resigned as deputy first minister in the Northern Ireland coalition power-sharing government on the 9 January 2017 in protest against the handling of an energy scheme that could cost taxpayers £490m. The decision was likely to lead to an election in Northern Ireland. The decision by Mr McGuinness also meant that the First Minister, Arlene Foster, also ceased to hold office. On the 16 January 2017 the Northern Ireland Secretary of State James Brokenshire set an election date of 2 March 2017. The situation raised fears of stability in the province and might also have an impact on Brexit negotiations. |
