Reports on the crashing of a Malaysia Airlines jet carrying 298 people in east Ukraine on a flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on 17 July 2014. The incident occurred as the civil conflict unfolded in Ukraine. Both sides accused each other of shooting down the plane with a missile. On the day of the crash it had not been objectively clear what caused the plane to come down. The crash took place in an area where Ukrainian forces were fighting with pro-Russia rebels. The European Union called in a statement for the circumstances of the incident to be clarified without delay through an international investigation. On 18 July, the OSCE announced it had negotiated with representatives of separatist groups for the site of the crash to be secured and safe access to be provided for rescue teams, national and international investigators, and SMM monitors. Ukraine's president called the incident an act of terrorism, while Russia's president blamed the Ukrainian government for restarting military operations in the area. Also on 18 July, the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on the disaster. It was agreed that the apparent deliberate downing of the passenger plane highlighted the need for an urgent resumption of a ceasefire and a serious effort to end the conflict. |
