Majority of EU countries in favour of GMO compromise

A majority of the EU member countries backed in March 2014 a compromise agreement on GMO authorisation which maintains an EU-wide approval scheme but allows national cultivation bans. The issue was discussed at the Environment Council on the 3 March 2014.

Under the proposals, the European Commission and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) would conduct assessments of GM crops.
