Following his inauguration as President of France on the 14 May 2017 Emmanuel Macron named 46-year-old Édouard Philippe from the centre-right Les Républicains party as the country’s new prime minister on the 15 May 2017. The choice, it was suggested, was an attempt to draw more leading figures from the conservative opposition into his new centrist party La République en Marche (REM), ahead of the legislative elections on 11 and 18 June 2017. The announcement of the members of the new French government was expected on the 16 May but was delayed until the 17 May 2017 to allow for a longer time for vetting. The new government contained people from the left, the right, the centre and greens, and had a gender balance. |
