Reports and analysis of the 2nd Round of France's legislative elections held on the 18 June 2017. French President Emmanuel Macron's newly formed centrist party Republique en Marche (Republic on the Move, REM) and their allies MoDem won 351 seats in the 577-seat National Assembly. Next, came the mainstream conservative Les Républicains party and their allies with 137 seats and they would form the main opposition. Far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen won a seat in the French parliament for the first time. Turnout was, as in the first round of voting on the 11 June 2017, low by French standards at 43%. President Macron reappointed Edouard Philippe as prime minister on the 19 June 2017 after the legislative run-off vote and asked him to form the next government. A number of changes to the cabinet only appointed a few weeks earlier on the 17 May 2017 emerged in the following days. Casualties included Richard Ferrand, Sylvie Goulard, François Bayrou and Marielle de Sarnez. |
