Europe's far-right parties were set to contest the 2014 European Parliament elections on a common manifesto, according to French National Front leader Marine Le Pen. According to EUObserver, senior figures in the European Parliament were growing increasingly anxious at the prospect of record numbers of eurosceptics being elected in May 2014, potentially winning more seats than several moderate establishment parties. The Guardian reported that the effort to pool policies and campaigns had foundered in the past because the various nationalists invariably found enemies in other nations and because far-right parties tended to be dominated by leaders enjoying a cult of personality. The Eurosceptic Dutch politician Geert Wilders and Marine Le Pen met on the 13 November 2013 and launched what they call an 'historic' alliance for the 2014 elections. Wilders said he hoped to expand the alliance to include Belgium's Vlaams Belang and Italy's Lega Nord. Britain's Ukip party had ruled out membership of any alliance including the Front National. Deutsche Welle reported on the 19 November 2013 that the latest surveys were indicating that Denmark's far-right Danish People's Party was poised to do well in local elections. However, the Danish party has already made clear that it would not join a far right alliance in the European Parliament. According to Marine Le Pen on the 22 January 2014, the creation of a Eurosceptic political group in the European Parliament was well under way. |
