Maintaining the United Kingdom's economic ties with the European Union after the country let the EU had to take priority over cutting immigration, the Labour Party new Brexit spokesman Keir Starmer said on the 9 October 2016 as attacking Prime Minister Theresa May’s hard-line opening negotiating stance with Brussels as outlined at the Conservative Party conference the previous week. He joined other MPs arguing for a clear role and vote for the UK Parliament in the Brexit negotiations. However, Downing Street said 'Of course parliament will have a role in the exit process, but this suggestion is simply an attempt to find another way to thwart the will of the British people'. Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, David Davis, made a statement in the House of Commons on 10 October 2016, on the next steps in leaving the European Union. Keir Starmer, Shadow Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, responded on behalf of the Opposition. On the 12 October 2016 MPs debated parliamentary scrutiny of the UK leaving the EU in the House of Commons. The subject for debate was chosen by the Labour Party opposition. The debate was moved by Shadow Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, Keir Starmer. Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, David Davis, responded on behalf of the Government. The motion, as amended, was passed without a division. |
