Ireland's prime minister Enda Kenny said to national media on 8 January 2016 that the country would not hold a referendum on EU membership if the United Kingdom decided to leave the European Union.

Mr Kenny also reiterated his appeal for the UK to stay in the union, warning that Brexit would cause 'significant difficulties for business' since €1 billion of trade crosses the Irish Sea every week.
