Features published before that date are still available via an archive website (see related url hyperlinks).Martin Schulz was elected leader of the Social Democrats (SPD) with 100% of the vote on the 19 March 2017. The party then went on to vote unanimously for him to be its candidate for chancellor in the federal election on the 24 September 2017. But despite all the euphoria surrounding Schulz commentators aren't completely convinced he will be able to beat Merkel.
