French authorities began to clear the Calais migrant camp known as the 'Jungle' on the 24 October 2016. The plan was to disperse the approximately 8,000 migrants to reception centres across France (centres d’accueil et d’orienation (CAO)) from where migrants would be able to start proceedings to claim asylum in France. However, the majority of the migrants, from Afghanistan, Sudan and Eritrea, wished eventually to travel to the United Kingdom. By the end of the 24 October 2016 French authorities claimed that 2,300 migrants had departed, approximately one third of the total. A 'soft' demolition of the camp was said to start on the 25 October 2016 alongside the continued removal of migrants. By the end of the 26 October 2016 French authorities said that a total of 5,596 adults and children had been moved. The authorities claimed that this part of the operation was now completed, but it was apparent to NGO representatives and the media that there were still people attempting to live in the camps. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said on the 27 October 2016 that it was 'deeply troubled' that while fires burned in parts of the Calais refugee and migrant many children were forced to sleep out in the cold. Around 1,600 unaccompanied minors remained in Calais, where they were moved into temporary shelter - some of whom would be allowed to go to the United Kingdom. On the 2 November 2016 the remaining unaccompanied minors left in Calais were bussed to shelters across France. Those who could prove that existing family members were in the UK would be able to apply from these shelters to move to the UK. |
