On the 25 October 2016 the European Commission Work Programme for 2017 was launched. It focused on delivery of the 10 priorities outlined in the Political Guidelines of July 2014 in order to address the biggest challenges which Europe faced today. It reflects the State of the Union 2016 speech given by European Commission President Juncker in September 2016. The Work Programme sets out concrete proposals for 2017, which form the Commission's contribution to the process of preparation for the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome in March 2017. The Work Programme proposes 21 key initiatives, as well as a further 18 REFIT proposals to improve the quality of existing EU legislation and ensure rules are fit for purpose. To ensure a focus on delivery, the Commission Work Programme identifies 34 priority pending proposals of the past two years where swift adoption by the Parliament and Council would make a tangible impact on the ground. The European Parliament's plenary session held a debate on the same day regarding the Commission's work programme. |
