The European Commission released a statement on 17 September 2016 regarding the decision of Bosnia and Herzegovina's Constitutional Court decision not to review the case of Republika Srpska (RS) day and to temporarily suspend the holding of a referendum in that region. Republika Srpska, the Serb part of the Bosnian federation, aimed to hold a referendum on 25 September on whether it can mark its national holiday on 9 January. The Constitutional tribunal had refused the proposal in 2015 because that day marks RS's unilateral decision of independence from Bosnia in 1992. A group of countries signed a joint statement urging the Serbs to abandon the referendum idea. Russia refused to sign such declaration, which was seen as a sign of support. |
