On the 16 January 2016, six months after finalisation of the historic Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with Iran, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) verified that Iran had implemented its nuclear related commitments under the JCPOA. As Iran had fulfilled its commitments, multilateral and national economic and financial sanctions related to Iran's nuclear programme were lifted in accordance with the JCPOA. The EU and E3+3 countries, consisting of the People’s Republic of China, the Republic of France, the Federal Republic of Germany, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the United States of America, and Iran would also cooperate in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy, in the framework of the JCPOA. The European Commission would send officials to Iran in February 2016 to explore energy ties, Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Canete said on the 17 January 2016. |
