On 17 July 2014 Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crashed in eastern Ukraine. The plane was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. On board were 283 passengers and 15 crew members. Among the passengers were 196 Dutch nationals. A criminal investigation was set up in The Netherlands and was aimed at identifying the suspects and was conducted by the Joint Investigation Team (JIT). In the JIT the Netherlands Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Dutch National Police worked together with police and judicial authorities of Australia, Belgium, Malaysia and Ukraine. The purpose of the criminal investigation was to establish the facts, identify those responsible for the crash and to collect evidence which could be used in court. An interim report was issued by the JIT on the 28 September 2016. It was said that JIT was convinced of having obtained irrefutable evidence to establish that on 17 July 2014, flight MH-17 was shot down by a BUK missile from the 9M38-series. According to the JIT there was also evidence identifying the launch location that involves an agricultural field near Pervomaiskyi which, at the time, was controlled by pro-Russian fighters. The investigation into those responsible for the crash will take more time. A separate technical investigation was carried out by The Dutch Safety Board (OVV), whose final report was published in October 2015. |
