Some observers worried that Italy’s 4 March 2018 election might lead to the rise to power of the eurosceptic Five Star Movement. This outcome would probably be avoided. But the strong showing of eurosceptic forces, in particular amongst the young, should be a wake up call to the EU. Without more focus on growth and investment, and an ambitious European approach towards better managing migration in partnership with third countries, euroscepticism would become increasingly embedded in Italian politics – even if the Five Star Movement never formed a government.
