Italian officials reported on the 3 January 2014 that Italian navy and coastguard vessels had rescued more than 1,000 migrants off the tiny island of Lampedusa in the previous 24 hours. Separately, Greek coast guards rescued 85 migrants off the island of Astypalaia on the 2 January 2014. More than 2,000 migrants landed on Italian shores in January 2014, the Italian government stated in February 2014 compared to just 217 in the same month in 2013. Deputy Interior Minister Filippo Bubbico said Italy had been subject to an 'incessant and massive influx of migrants' in 2013. He said that a total of 42,925 migrants reached Italy by sea in 2013, an increase of 325% on 2012. The figures did not include migrants who died making the perilous sea crossing. Italy's navy rescued a further 1,123 people from inflatable boats in the space of 24 hours on the 5 february 2014, as clandestine migration from North Africa reached record levels. |
