Tax police in Naples arrested 47 people – including 16 judges – and seized assets said to be worth over €1bn in an anti-mafia operation called Operation Bad Metal on the 19 March 2012, allegedly exposing the growing penetration by organised crime of big business and the Italian state.

Prosecutors said Operation Bad Metal involved authorities in Switzerland, Belgium and Luxembourg.

Assets seized included land, buildings, bank accounts and corporate holdings. It was the biggest financial operation aimed against the mafia since September, 2010, when authorities in Sicily seized €1.5bn of assets during an operation into the mafia’s grip on wind power contracts on the island.
