After months of dithering on the economy, Ireland is starting to enjoy a reprieve in the debt markets, winning favour over the other troubled economies of Greece, Portugal and Spain.

Like these countries Ireland is a European Union economy with a large deficit. But the populist Fianna Fail-led government is widely perceived to be taking tough measures on its public finances, after an unpopular budget in December 2009 slashed public sector pay and welfare benefits.
