Further information: The journalist and his partner were shot dead a few days before their bodies were found at their home in the village of Veľká Mača. Media reports hinted at a potential link between this case and Mr Kuciak's investigations on corruption in Slovak politics. One of his colleagues stated he was writing a report concerning organized crime and politicians, and in particular on the connection between the Italian Mafia group 'Ndrangheta and Slovak politicians. Journalists in Slovakia expressed concerns for their safety and the wider public showed their anger on this apparent attack on freedom of speech. Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico offered a reward of one million euros for anyone who could clarify the assassination. Political leaders in the country later clashed after political change was demanded. The European Parliament called on 14 March for a full investigation on the murders of the Slovak journalist and his fiancée, urging the EU to better protect its journalists and whistle-blowers. Background information: This case followed a similar one in Malta, when journalist and blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia was killed after investigating alleged corruption cases in the country. Other four journalists had already been murdered in Europe since the beginning of 2017. The Slovak journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée were found dead at their house on 25 February 2018. The police later confirmed they had been assassinated. |
