The main farmers association in the United Kingdom, the National Farmers' Union (NFU) commissioned an external respected agricultural research institute - the LEI at Wageningen University - to consider the impact of a number of possible trade and farm support scenarios that would be open to the UK Government in the event of the country voting to leave the EU in the referendum of 23 June 2016. The report was published in April 2016. On the 18 April 2016, following a consultation with its members the NFU stated that 'The NFU Council resolves that on the balance of existing evidence available to us at present, the interests of farmers are best served by our continuing membership of the European Union'. |
