IMF chief and possible French presidential candidate Dominique Strauss-Kahn was charged on the 15 May 2011 with a criminal sexual act, attempted rape, and unlawful imprisonment of a hotel maid in New York City. A lawyer representing Strauss-Kahn, Benjamin Brafman, told Reuters in an email that the International Monetary Fund chief 'will plead not guilty'. The arrest of Mr Strauss-Kahn was greeted in France with disbelief and shock. The former Socialist Finance Minister in France was seen as the left’s best hope to win power in the 2012 presidential election in France. Those hopes would appear severely damaged and Mr Strauss-Kahn’s own reputation shattered. Some people suggested he was a victim of some kind of international conspiracy to harm his French political ambitions or to harm the IMF. |
