Hungary plans to close its borders to refugees trying to enter the country via Serbia by building a four-metre-high fence, Interior Minister Peter Szijártó announced on the 18 June 2015. Europe's borders need to be protected, some commentators write approvingly n articles in European newspapers.. Others criticise that 25 years after the fall of the Iron Curtain, Hungary of all countries is putting up a new wall. Serbia's prime minister Aleksandar Vucic said he was 'shocked' by Hungary's plan. In 2014, Hungary received more migrants per capita than any other EU country apart from Sweden, up to almost 43,000 people from just 2,000 in 2012. 95% of them had crossed from Serbia. Up to June 20145, 54,000 migrants had entered Hungary, and the total in 2015 was expected to be up to 130,000, according to János Lázár, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s chief of staff. |
