Article reports that Hungary’s parliament passed a controversial media law in December 2010 that critics say could severely hamper the operation of a free press. The establishment of a national media and communications authority, the NMHH, which has powers to levy large fines on broadcasters and publishers that fall foul of the law – for example, by failing to provide balanced coverage – has caused alarm at home and abroad. The move by Hungary's right-wing government was regarded by some as the most recent example of a disturbing political trend in the country that was once hailed as a model for post-commununist development.
