EurActiv reported on a protest taking place in Hungary on 9 November 2014, during which thousands of people gathered to demonstrate against alleged corruption at the country's tax authority and for wider democratic freedoms. According to the website, following the protests against an internet tax which was ultimately scrapped by the Hungarian government, opposition on the streets was growing against Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. New protests took place in Hungary on 17 November, where over 10,000 demonstrators demanded the resignation of Mr Orbán, accusing him of employing corrupt public servants and cosying up to the Kremlin. Reacting to the protests, as well as to the criticism from the European Union and the United States, Mr Orbán said his country would not be forced to pick one side or another in a Cold War-style standoff in Europe. |
