British politicians love to criticise the European Convention on Human Rights. A closer look would show them that they should praise it, not bury it. The ECHR is the only legally enforceable set of international human rights norms. Only in the 47 countries that have acceded to the ECHR – every European state except Belarus – can citizens seek a legal remedy from an international tribunal if they have not got satisfaction from domestic courts. |
