Should United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron be hoping that the England team does well in the European football championships starting on 10 June 2016 if he decides to hold the crucial remain / leave referendum on UK membership of the EU during June 2016.

The author suggests that if England does not do well it could have much greater consequences 'than simply prompting another bout of soul searching about the national football team’s perennial lack of success'.
