President François Hollande said a 'damaged' Europe must stimulate growth as he flew to Berlin on the 15 May 2012 for a first meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, hours after he was formally invested as France’s first socialist president for 17 years. In a sombre inaugural speech President Hollande spoke of a 'damaged' Europe 'struggling to escape' the sovereign debt crisis. France faced 'massive debt, weak growth, high unemployment and reduced competitiveness', he warned. In his later discussions with Chancellor Merkel he pledged to work with Germany to resolve the EU's economic crisis. The two expressed broad agreement over the necessity to kick-start the European economy but they also had to acknowledge differences over their concepts of growth. |
