In an article published by the French newspaper Journal du Dimanche on 19 July 2015, France's president François Hollande called for a stronger and more harmonised Eurozone. This call followed turbulent weeks relating to the management of the Greek financial crisis, in which a strong lack of agreement was visible. Mr Hollande defended that a 'vanguard of countries' should lead the Euro area, which would include its own government, a 'specific budget' and its own parliament. Prime minister Manuel Valls later detailed that such vanguard should be composed by the six founding countries of the European Community: France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. The French parliament had already made a similar call before approving the deal for a third bailout agreed between Greece and its creditors in July 2015. |
