Greece made a successful return to the financial markets on the 10 April 2014 after investors flocked to its first sale of government bonds since the eurozone crisis flared up in 2010. There was strong demand for a new five-year bond, despite the country being gripped by its first anti-austerity general strike of 2014. For some commentators it was the end of the euro crisis. Others warned that neither Greece nor Europe were out of the woods yet. On the same day, a car bomb went off outside a Bank of Greece building in central Athens, smashing windows in nearby shops but causing no injuries, police and witnesses said. German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited Athens on the 11 April 2014 in a show of support for the Greek government after its successful return to the bond markets and a first budgetary surplus in 11 years. |
