Greece formally asked on 4 June 2015 to bundle four looming loan payments to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) into one only, to be paid by the end of the month. Greece was due to repay €1.6 billion to the IMF on 5, 12, 16 and 19 June. The decision allowed the Greek government to buy some time, with a move which is allowed according to IMF rules but only rarely authorised by the organisation. Prime Minister of Greece Alexis Tsipras told the Greek Parliament on the 5 June 2015 that the latest proposals of the country's lenders presented on 3 June 2015 were 'unrealistic' but that he still believed the government was close to achieving an agreement with the institutions. Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis told the Greek Proto Thema daily on the 7 June 2015 that proposed reform plan from the Troika was 'an aggressive move designed to terrorise the Greek government'. However, European Commission president, Jean-Claude Juncker, said on the 7 June 2015 that Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras had failed to deliver alternative economic reforms that he had 'promised'. He also criticised Mr Tsipras for distorting proposals by international creditors for a cash-for-reform deal to save Athens from default. |
