The charity Save the Children reported in August 2016 that the average number of refugees and migrants arriving daily in Greece was at its highest since May 2016, causing serious congestion in the camps on the islands and putting children at risk. The facilities on the islands of Lesvos, Chios and Samos were bursting at the seams. There were now more than 10,300 refugees and migrants, including approximately 3,800 children, stranded on a handful of Greek islands. This was forcing women and children to live in demoralising and unsafe conditions. EurActiv reported on the 18 August 2016 an announcement from the Greek government that it planned to build several new facilities with a capacity of about 1,000 persons each, to transfer refugees from the islands and other strained or temporary sites. |
