EurActiv, the BBC and other news sources reported that Google had launched on the 30 May 2014 a service through which European citizens could request that hyperlinks to what they deem objectionable be taken off internet search results.

This would be a first step towards complying with the European Court of Justice ruling on the 13 May 2014 (see related url hyperlink 'European Court of Justice orders Google to delete personal data').

The ruling by the ECJ found that certain users can ask search engines to remove results for queries that include their name where those results are 'inadequate, irrelevant or no longer relevant, or excessive in relation to the purposes for which they were processed'.
