The European Parliament's environment committee recommended on the 22 March 2016 that the European Commission should not renew the authorisation to use the herbicide glyphosate, so long as serious concerns remained about its carcinogenicity and endocrine disruptive properties. Subsequently, MEPs in plenary session on the 13 April 2016 recommended the renewal should happen ofr a period of 7 years instead of 15 years, and only for professional uses. MEPs argued the Commission should set up an independent review and disclose all the scientific evidence that the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) used to assess glyphosate. However, farmers representative expressed concerned at the prospect of a ban on the use of the most heavily used herbicide in the world. Copa & Cogeca sent letter to EU Commissioner Andriukaitis on the 25 May 2016 expressing major concerns about possibility of not renewing the authorisation of glyphosate & disregarding the EFSA’s conclusions. Following a May 2016 meeting at which national governmental representatives had failed to come to a consensus agreement the EU Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed(SCoPAFF) was expected to re-examine the issue at a meeting in early June 2016. |
