According to EurActiv global airlines on 11 June 2012 urged the European Union to defuse an international emissions row as a group of nations led by China, the United States and India kept up their opposition to EU plans to force carriers to join a carbon trading scheme.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reiterated its call for a comprehensive global solution on aviation emissions to be negotiated through the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

The call was made in the keynote State of the Industry address at the start of the 68th IATA Annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Summit in Beijing, China, June 2012.
