The Christian Social Union, the regional political allies of German chancellor Angela Merkel in the state of Bavaria, announced sweeping leadership changes on the 30 September 2008 in a move to drag the party out of one of its deepest crises following an electoral rout on the 28 September 2008. The head of CSU, Erwin Huber, resigned after the party's worst election performance in decades.
