Germany's Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said on 21 January 2016 he wanted to drastically reduce the number of refugees coming into the country. He also announced that Germany would extend its border controls for an indefinite period. The decision came as German Chancellor Angela Merkel felt increasing pressure from parts of her CDU party, and mainly from its sister party in Bavaria, CSU. Germany's President Joachim Gauck speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos on the 20 January 2016 said it was 'morally and politically necessary' to limit Europe's refugee influx, warning that failing to do so meant ceding ground to populists and extremists. It also emerged on the 21 January 2016 that a number of mainly southern German states were implementing German federal laws, which required asylum seekers to use up their own resources before receiving state aid. This followed disclosure of similar practices in Switzerland and proposed in Denmark. |
