Major analysis feature. Angela Merkel, a Chancellor whose overriding concern is to save the single currency is facing one of her biggest tests yet in Germany and the wider world.

During September 2011 she has been engaged in a frantic round of campaigning to reassure her grassroots supporters of the need to pledge more German money to underpin future rescue programmes for members of the European monetary union. A crucial vote was due to take place in the Bundestag on 29 September 2011.

Her response to the problems in the eurozone have been seen as an uncomfortable balancing act between short-term fire-fighting and working on a long-term strategy to set in place the tools and institutions needed to head off future disasters.
