The degree of cooperation between Germany's intelligence agency BND and the Natonal Security Agency (NSA) of the United States since 2002 became a major political issue in Germany in May 2015 following revelations the previous month of the depth of the collaboration. While Chancellor Merkel defended the BND in comments on the 4 May 2015, her coalition partner and Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel called for a thorough inquiry. Chancellor Merkel said there was an 'an innate tension' between freedom and security. The federal prosecutors office signified that an investigation had opened. News sources on the 5 May 2015 reported that Austria had filed legal complaints against Germany and sought clarification as to the extent of the BND's activities spying on public authorities and companies in Germany and other EU countries. The Süddeutsche Zeitung website reported on the 7 May 2015 that the German intelligence service BND had stopped internet monitoring for the US National Security Agency (NSA) that week as the issue escalated in Germany. |
