Wolfgang Schäuble, Germany’s Finance Minister, issued on the 26 April 2010 an urgent appeal to his country’s parliamentarians in Berlin to back a eurozone loan to Greece as an essential move to defend the stability of the euro. While insisting that such a loan would get the green light only if Athens reaches a deal this week with the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank and the European Commission, he said the consequences of failure to reach agreement were impossible to predict. German Chancellor Angela Merkel stressed the need for a stable European currency, urging debt-ridden Greece to implement tougher measures to get its finances in order. |
