Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a 'strategic partnership' agreement with Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia on the 24 November 2014. The move angered Georgian authorities, who interpreted it as a way to incorporate the territory into Russia. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said in a statement the 'so-called treaty' did not contribute to a peaceful and lasting settlement of the situation in Georgia, and the Western alliance would not recognise it. EU's High Representative for Foreign Policy Federica Mogherini stated that the agreement violated Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity and was 'detrimental to ongoing efforts to stabilise the security situation in the region'. |
