Japan hosted the meeting of the G7 heads of states and government on 26-27 May 2016. The summit was expected to focus on economy and trade, foreign policy, climate change and energy. Leaders were also expectec to discuss counter-terrorism and the migration and refugee crisis.

The European Union was represented by Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, and Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission.
