The Group of Seven (G7) nations agreed on the 25 April 2014 to 'move swiftly' and impose new sanctions against Russia. They accused Moscow of failing to implement the Geneva accord of the previous week, aimed to reduce tensions in eastern Ukraine. The OSCE and various news sources reported that the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission got confirmation on the 25 April 2014 that the military observers carrying out an inspection under the OSCE Vienna Document had been taken captive by forces of the self-proclaimed mayor of Sloviansk. The captured observers were paraded by the pro-Russian rebels on the 27 April 2014. Some reports suggested that the captured observers were not formally OSCE Observers but 'rather on a German Bundeswehr mission at the request of The mayor of Kharkiv, a city in eastern Ukraine, was shot and critically wounded on the 28 April 2014. Euro|Topics and other sources reported that the EU and the US extended their sanctions against Russia on the 28 April 2014, imposing further visa bans and freezing more accounts. Commentators criticised the West's reaction as far too hesitant, and saw an international peace-keeping mission in eastern Ukraine as the more sensible approach. |
