In June 2014 President Hollande of France announced his intention to decrease the number of metropolitan regions from 22 to 14 and set the objective of a constitutional reform providing for the abolition of the General Council in 2020.

Within the framework of the territorial reform, on the night of 19 to 20 November 2014 the National Assembly adopted at second reading the map of 13 regions, compared with the current 22, as during the first reading in July 2014.

The new regions came into being in 2016 although a formal new map of the new regions was only published in October 2016.
