French PM says no vote in parliament on Syria

French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said on the 2 September 2013 that there would be no vote during a parliamentary debate on the Syria crisis on the 4 September 2013, adding that there was no doubt that the Syrian regime of President Assad was behind a deadly chemical attack two weeks earlier.

US President Barack Obama had deferred any military action in Syria, seeking Congressional approval while the British parliament rejected any intervention on the 29 August 2013.

The French president can order military action without parliamentary approval but some lawmakers had urged President Hollande to put the issue to a vote.

French President Francois Hollande met with fellow EU leaders in the G20 club - Germany, Italy and the UK - in the margins of a G20 summit in St Petersburg on the 5 September 2013 to try to forge a joint European position.
