France’s National Assembly backed by a big majority on the 13 July 2010 a bill banning the wearing of the full face veil in public spaces. The vote takes France a step closer to becoming the first democracy to ban women in the street from wearing the niqab or burka. The Belgian parliament is planning a similar clampdown while Spain is proposing to curb the full veil’s use in public buildings. On the 14 September 2010 France's Senate (upper house) overwhelmingly approved the bill that would ban wearing the Islamic full veil in public. |
