The French authorities reportedly authorised a demonstration in support for Gaza on the 23 July 2014 after two government-banned demonstrations over the previous weekend turned violent. A French court jailed three men for rioting after a pro-Palestinian rally in a mixed suburb of Paris degenerated into anti-Semitic violence. On the 21 July 2014 President Hollande called a meeting of Jewish, Muslim, Christian and Buddhist leaders to discuss the outbreak of anti-Jewish violence over the previous days when demonstrators against Israel’s actions in Gaza had taken place. Other demonstrations also took place in other European countries such as Belgium, Sweden and Germany. In some places, such actions turned into violence, raising fears of anti-Semitism. The European Commission announced on the 25 July 2014 that it would give an additional €5 million to support emergency relief operations in the Gaza Strip where the humanitarian crisis was mounting. Protests continued in various European capitals (including Brussels, London Paris) over the Gaza conflict over the weekend of 26-27 July 2014. |
