France24 and other news sources reported that France was thrown into fresh turmoil on the 25 August 2014 after President François Hollande asked his prime minister to form a new government following an open feud within his cabinet over the country’s economic direction. The president ordered Prime Minister Manuel Valls to form a new cabinet 'consistent with the direction [Hollande] has set for the country', the presidency said in a statement. An ally of President François Hollande's, Emmanuel Macron was named economy minister on the 26 August 2014, as part of the new cabinet named. EurActiv suggested that the new cabinet would pursue President Hollande's plan of 'reconciling pro-business measures to boost growth - including €40bn in corporate tax cuts - with promises to adhere to EU budget rules'. The Local.fr said that the move was a 'clear, but potentially hazardous break from the left of his party'. Prime Minister Valls said he would hold a vote of confidence in the Assembly in 'September or October' (2014) and he acknowledged that the government would be finished if they did not get the backing of the National Assembly. The European Commission said on 27 August 2014 that France's new government should urgently speed up its reform plan, aimed at helping the economy by cutting business taxes at the same time as trimming public spending to bring the deficit to within EU limits. |
