France was left feeling tense again on 26 June 2015 after a 35-year-old delivery driver named Yassin Salhi, a radical Islamist, decapitated his boss and attempted to carry out an apparent suicide attack on a gas factory near Lyon. For the second time in less than six months French leaders urged their country to unite after it was struck by apparently another Islamist terrorist attack. Politico and other news sources suggested that there might have been a failure of the intelligence services. How could a well-equipped intelligence community let yet another known Islamist radical strike on French soil, so soon and in such barbaric fashion? Prime Minister Manuel Valls warned on the 27 June 2015 that France faced more terrorist attacks to come. He said that the attack would create tension in France - home to Western Europe's largest Muslim population -- that 'will be exploited'. |
