At a press conference on 7 September 2015, the French president François Hollande explained France's position on the refugee crisis and called for an international conference to address the phenomenon. Mr Holland unveiled that France was ready to accept 24,000 refugees over the following two years, adding to 1,000 of those who had crossed from Hungary to Germany in the previous days to this announcement. The French president also regretted that the voluntary system proposed by the European Union had not created enough space to accomodate all the refugees, and criticised the attitude of some EU member-states, namely the ones from Central and Eastern Europe. The press conference also highlighted the decision of France to become more active militarily in Syria, starting with surveillance flights and eventually undertaking airstrikes against islamist targets. |
